Beck Plays Tracks From ‘Song Reader’ For The First Time Ever

Fans of Beck received something a little special last night in Santa Cruz, California, with the multi-instrumentalist playing 2 tracks from his non-recorded book of sheet music Song Reader, after publicly saying he would never do so.

The ’90s slacker rock king released Song Reader in December 2012, a book of sheet music with 20 songs and more than 100 pages of art, with the intention of the listener becoming the musician and interpreting the songs any way they like. But Beck blew that idea off last night, showing us how he thinks the tracks Sorry and Heaven’s Ladder are really meant to sound.

Beck previously stated that he wouldn’t be performing the material but changed his tune recently, announcing a Song Reader evening in London on 4th July. The lineup, which would see us shank our own grandmother for tickets, includes Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, Franz Ferdinand, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Beth Orton and Joan As Police Woman amongst others.
