Big Day Out CEO Responds To Lineup Speculation

Written by James Arnold-Garvey on July 29, 2013

UPDATE: Big Day Out 2014 lineup is finally here, and it sure is a big ‘un!

Big Day Out CEO Adam Zammit has responded to an article published in the Herald Sun this evening which stated Snoop Dogg, Blur and Pearl Jam would be headlining the 2014 iteration of the festival. Taking to Twitter, Zammit has admonished the story’s author, Nu Te Koha, saying that neither he nor the story could be trusted.

Te Koha revealed in his article that Britpop legends Blur and US rapper Snoop Dogg would be co-headlining the festival, after last week “locking in” an appearance from grunge pioneers Pearl Jam. It was also suggested that Arcade Fire, Major Lazer and Steve Angello have had “positive talks” with Big Day Out organisers.

He also ruled out previously rumoured act The Cure, and confirmed Depeche Mode and rapper Jay Z were not on the 2014 roster.

Zammit has now rebuffed the story via Twitter after a follower made him aware of the revelations. After being asked if the story was a “legit headliner leak”, Zammit warned them not to trust Nui’s “guess work”, going on to poke fun at suggestions that Snoop Dogg was a “white” whale – a term earlier used to describe the festival’s headliners by BDO promoter Ken West.

Zammit was also quick to point out factual errors in the article, including the printed – and now corrected – date for the official Big Day Out lineup announcement, which is set down for 8pm this Wednesday, 31st July.

Though Te Koha is known for his outrageous and often far off-the-mark tour predictions, the promise of these three headliners along with the other bands mentioned would mean next year’s festival would live up to the “lineup to end all lineups” tag Big Day Out has been touting.

Some of Nui’s past failed predictions include Pearl Jam headlining Big Day Out 2012 (then being replaced by Radiohead) as well as Blink-182 and Limp Bizkit for Big Day Out 2010 and Blink and Prince at BDO 2012.

Even though this is exciting and frustrating news, we wouldn’t lock anything in until Wednesday night, folks. Until then, you can follow all of our Big Day Out 2014 coverage here.
