Jack White Reckons Rock Music Right Now Needs “Fresh Blood”

Jack White has spoken out about why he thinks rock bands are increasingly being left off festival lineups.

Speaking to US radio station KROQ White said, “Rock’n’roll needs an injection of some new young blood to really just knock everybody dead right now.”

Despite thinking that there isn’t any right now, he believes that a rock revival is “brewing” and thinks that the genre has always gone through ups and downs.

“Since rock and roll’s inception, every 10, 12 years, there’s a breath of fresh air and a new injection of some sort of what you could I guess call punk attitude or something like that,” he said.

“A wildness. Things get crazy and then they get crazy for a couple years, and then they kind of get subtle, and then you’ve gotta wait for the next wave to come through and get people really excited and screaming about it again.”

He further said that he’s seen this through his own record company Third Man Records and feels like it’s going to “explode” again soon.

Maybe that’s because he’s got a new album coming out in March Boarding House Reach which will be his first since 2014.

This year’s Coachella lineup has a distinct lack of rock bands on it. The festival, that has been headlined by White in the past, features three solo headliners in Beyoncé, The Weeknd and Eminem. It’s generally a good indication of what is going on globally but we’ll have to wait to see whether major Aussie festivals like Splendour In The Grass follow suit.
