The Midway Report: Triple J’s Hottest 100 Of 2018

Update: Winner of the triple J Hottest 100 of 2018 has been announced

Happy Triple J Hottest 100 Day, kids! The countdown has been underway since midday, and in the immortal words of Mr. Jon Bon Jovi:

Yes, we’ve already reached the halfway check point in the countdown of the most *flame emoji* songs of 2018, which means we’re about to get down to the BUSINESS end.

So before we crack on, let’s take a minute to pause and reflect on all the juicy stats, milestones and surprises of the Hottest 100’s bottom 50!

We already know this year’s countdown features 65 Aussie songs, which is just one short of the record-breaking 66.

Of the first 50 songs in the countdown, 31 are homegrown, meaning the top 50 will contain another 34 true blue Strayan tunes!

Vance JoyRuel and DMA’s have already notched up two songs a piece in the countdown, with Vance’s ‘We’re Going Home’ and ‘Saturday Sun’ coming in at #53 and #54 respectively, 16-year-old sensation Ruel snagging the #87 slot with ‘Younger’ and #89 with ‘Dazed & Confused’ and DMA’s swinging in at #97 with ‘Do I Need You Now?’ and and #60 with ‘The End’.

Elsewhere, Unearthed star G Flip has made her Hottest 100 debut with her breakout hit ‘Killing My Time’ coming in at #62.

Sydney northern beaches surf rockers Lime Cordiale are also Hottest 100 debutantes this year, bagging the #86 position with their track ‘Dirt Cheap’.

Meanwhile, #1 contenders Ocean Alley have already cracked the countdown, coming in at #100 with ‘Happy Sad’.

As those meticulously studying voting trends, like 100 Warm Tunas and The Bean Counter’s 100, have pointed out, this year’s countdown is likely to be a two-horse race with Ocean Alley’s ‘Confidence’ and Childish Gambino’s ‘This Is America’ leading the charge.

In saying that though, Ruby Fields, Amy Shark, Fisher, Wafia and Dean Lewis also all have pretty good odds of taking out the coveted top spot.

There’s also been a good showing for music on the heavy end of the spectrum so far (way better than last year), with The Amity Affliction’s ‘Ivy (Doomsday)’ coming in at #94, Trophy Eyes’ ‘You Can Count On Me’ at #93 and WWAX’s ‘Labrador’ at #88 so far.

It comes after the J’s revealed that a record number of votes were lodged in the countdown this year.
