Six Time Grammy Winning Blues Artist, Dr. John Dies At Age 77

Six time Grammy Award winning blues musician, Dr. John has passed away aged 77 following a heart attack. The New Orleans born artist passed away Thursday morning according to a statement posted on his official Twitter.

The statement reads, “Towards the break of day on June 6, 2019, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., professionally known as Dr. John, passed away of a heart attack.

“As a Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductee, six time Grammy winner, songwriter, composer, producer, and performer, he created a unique blend of music, which carried his home town, New Orleans, at its heart, as it was always in his heart.

“The family thanks all whom have shared his unique musical journey, and requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.”

Tributes have began pouring out for Dr. John. Ringo Starr tweeted an image of the two together captioned: “God bless Dr. John peace and love to all his family I love the doctor peace and love”.

Lead singer of Blondie, Debbie Harry paid tribute too.

Dr. John’s career started in the late ’50s and he’s best known for his song ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’.

He released 35 albums — three of which won Grammys, his most recent release was Locked Down in 2013.

Locked Down talked about drugs, Dr. John’s time in prison (a two year sentence for drug charges in the ’60s), and his attempts to repair his relationship with his children. He told New York Times that he was married twice and had “a lot” of children.
