The Muffs’ Frontwoman Kim Shattuck Dies At 56

Kim Shattuck, bassist and singer of The Muffs, has died. She spent the last two years of her life battling with ALS. Her husband confirmed the news via social media today. She was 56.

Her husband wrote via Instagram:

“This morning the love of my life Kim passed peacefully in her sleep after a two-year struggle with ALS. I am the man I am today because of her.”

“She will live with all of us through her music, our shared memories and in her fierce creative spirit. I love you always my Kimmy. Thanks for sharing your life with me.”

Her music career kicked off in the 1980’s, with Shattuck and Melanie Vammen being members of The Pandoras. Then in 1991, the pair started punk band The Muffs who would go on to write six records over 16 years, with the band’s seventh studio record No Holiday due to be released in a few weeks time.

The on-again, off-again nature of The Muffs allowed her to collaborate with other musicians like NOFX. She also had a brief stint as touring bassist for The Pixies following Kim Deal’s departure from the band.

Vammen posted the news to social media, saying “My heart is forever broken.”
