Love Letter To A Record: A.GIRL On The Weeknd’s ‘Trilogy’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

A. GIRL – ‘Trilogy’ by The Weeknd (2012)

Dear Trilogy,

You saved me in more ways than one.

Mentally, emotionally and physically.

3 is my number that follows me always.

But you didn’t follow me, you found me.

Thank you for helping me get through the nights,

Throughout my echoes of silence,

For getting me through the morning.

My life is a rolling stone,

I only listen to you when I’m in the zone,

Only Thursday’s but right through to the Weeknd.

I know this doesn’t make sense to anyone else but an xo fan,

But this is how I choose to write my love letter to a record.

For about 7 years, I couldn’t go to sleep without listening to ‘Echoes Of Silence on repeat. I had to fall asleep to it and wake up to it every single day for those 7 years. I discovered Trilogy at the time I needed it most, and I didn’t even know it. No one knew how desperate I was to fill the gap that I had, and omg, when I heard Trilogy for the first time it filled up all my painful gaps and the void, no gaps for anything to come through…. not even the good. I found Trilogy at a point in time where I needed it to sing through the pain and trouble I was going through, I liked Trilogy the way I do because it had the lyrics I wanted to hear and think I could relate to because I thought “yeah I feel that type of pain too”.

Up until right now, it’s probably the only thing I can listen to back to front without skipping, and I am the queen of skipping songs, but I can go forever listening to Trilogy back to front. Don’t hand me the aux when I’m in a downer mood unless you’re ready to hear Trilogy over and over.

Seriously, Trilogy helped me get through some dark times man, through deaths, heartbreaks, arguments, depression. The evolution of The Weeknd and his music has been amazing but nothing — absolutely nothing — compares to his work of art that is Trilogy. I was lucky enough to see The Weeknd preform at the o2 arena in London, and wow was I impressed.

I think I was about 13 or 14 in the biggest mosh pit I’ve ever been in in my whole life, and my freaking luck he was touring his Kiss Land album, but he also decided to play his Trilogy album because it was the last leg of the tour. I cried, I screamed, and I yelled. This was at a time where The Weeknd was still somewhat “underground” before his features with Ariana Grande. Don’t get me wrong, ‘Love Me Harder’ is a cool song, but ask any xo fan and they’ll tell you nothing compares to Trilogy.

For all the tears Trilogy has helped me get through, thank you… Thank you Abel, and thank you Trilogy.

Following on from the release of her critically praised single ‘Play’, Western Sydney-based RnB artist A.GIRL has just revealed the accompanying music video – shot and directed by Joseph Plumb from South Of Home Creative. Watch below!

There’s something intoxicatingly dark and theatrical and about A. GIRL’s hook-stacked R&B pop songwriting. ‘Play’ is straight fire, but served on the rocks. Sultry, self-assured and delivered with just the right touch of sass. We may have a future star on our hands here.
