Gerard Way Will Reportedly Compose The Score For Clerks 3

Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has apparently been tapped to provide the soundtrack for the third instalment in Kevin Smith’s Clerks film series.

According to SlashFilm, Smith revealed the news while on the road to promote upcoming film Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, telling fans that he’s convinced Way – whose one and only solo record was 2014’s Hesitant Alien – to score the film.

For Way, whose interests have geared more towards comic book writing and recently television in the last few years, it would be the first film score he’s ever written.

However, Way hasn’t been totally quiet on the music front over the past few years. 2018 saw Way release the singles ‘Baby, You’re A Haunted House’, ‘Getting Down the Germs’ and ‘Dasher’, and this year he recorded covers of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘A Hazy Shade of Winter’ and The Turtles’ ‘Happy Together’ for the Netflix adaptation of his Umbrella Academy series.

The plot of Clerks 3 will reportedly be based off a heart attack Smith suffered early last year, mirrored in the character of Randal.

“Randal has a heart attack, decides that he came so close to death, and his life has meant nothing, there’s nobody to memorialize him, he has no family or anything like that.

And in the recovery, while under fentanyl, he comes to the conclusion at mid-life, having almost died, having worked in a movie store his whole life and watched other people’s movies, he tells Dante, I think we need to make a movie. So Dante and Randal make Clerks. That’s the story of Clerks 3.”
