Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.
In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.
MUKI – ‘Halycon’ by Ellie Goulding (2012)
I remember I had just got my red Ps and I wanted to fill up my glove box with CDs that I could listen to whilst I drove to school. I put on Halycon by Ellie Goulding on a night coming home from my friend’s party. I would always blast the speakers in my car and they would thump with the bass as if they had their own heartbeat with the music.
The first thing you hear on this album is a really unique melody from Ellie in ‘Don’t Say A Word’. It wasn’t a typical pop melody either. It sounded inspired by eastern melodies and instantly I was transported into a different world. I pulled the window down and had my hand out, the wind catching the synths glittering and sending them out into the mid-summer night.
It was my last year of school, and I listened to ‘Anything Could Happen’, and I truly felt in my heart that anything COULD happen. As I sang it at the top of my lungs, alone in my car, I imagined myself singing songs that I had written myself at festivals. Images lit up like fires in my brain, imagining the world I would create for myself. It was the first time it clicked in my head that pop music really could be whatever I wanted it to be.
I feel like that album broke a lot of the stereotypical rules of pop music. It was the first time I recognised in myself that I also wanted to be a ruler breaker. I never wanted my music to fit into a nice little box, I always wanted to break down the boundaries and create my own universe, and I think this record helped me come to that conclusion. It’s still an awesome record to this day, it still feels fresh.
