Sydney’s Vivid Festival Has Now Been Cancelled Due To Coronavirus Fears

Sydney’s Vivid Festival is the latest massive event to be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The annual music & light festival, which attracts more than 2 million punters, has been axed for 2020 as impending legislation seeks to outlaw public gatherings of more than 500 people.

In a short statement to its website, festival organisers clarified that the festival wouldn’t be getting rescheduled in 2020, but would return next year.

“Unfortunately, Vivid Sydney 2020 has been cancelled on the recommendations of the Australian Government and health authorities regarding non-essential, organised gatherings of more than 500 people,” the statement reads.

“Vivid Sydney will shine brighter than ever in 2021!”

The festival was due to start on May 22, with neo-soul legend Jill Scott due to perform as part of the Vivid LIVE program.

The rest of the lineup had yet to be announced at the time of the cancellation.

The festival’s axing spells billions of dollars in tourist revenue ripped out of the NSW economy.

It’s just one of thousands of events being postponed as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads, including but not limited to Download Festival, Tasmania’s Dark Mofo and the Under The Southern Stars concert series.
