The full program for Vivid Sydney has been rolled out today (March 12th), with shows taking place across the CBD from Friday, May 23rd to Saturday, June 14th. The festival will return to the Sydney Opera House, Mary’s Underground and Tumbalong Park, while also hosting shows at venues such as the City Recital Hall, the Oxford Art Factory and the Metro Theatre for the first time. A venue-by-venue breakdown of artists performing, as well as ticketing information, can be found below.
On the international front, Vivid’s line-up is headed up by two exclusive performances by Anohni & The Johnsons inside the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. The New York-based collective have not performed in Australia since 2015, where they performed at that year’s Dark Mofo. It marked the group’s last show for over eight years, as frontwoman Anohni pursued a solo career with her acclaimed 2016 album Hopelessness – the live show for which was premiered at that year’s Vivid.
Their 2025 return will see them performing a new show, which is entitled Mourning The Great Barrier Reef. In a show that Anohni herself has described as “a ceremony fit for the purpose of grieving a loss of such monumental scale”, she and the Johnsons will perform songs from across their catalogue set to cinematic footage of the Reef and scientists who have studied it for decades.
Anohni & The Johnsons – ‘It Must Change’
Also performing at the Opera House is Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons, who is not only touring Australia for the first time in nearly 14 years, but for the very first time as a solo artist. Gibbons released her debut solo album, Lives Outgrown, in 2024. Furthermore, the Vivid announcement brings about the long-awaited confirmation that, indeed, Sigur Rós will be performing in the Concert Hall with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as part of their previously-announced orchestral Australian tour, which also includes Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Over at Carriageworks, the Eveleigh space will host the likes of jazz great Kamasi Washington, hip-hop supergroup Black Star (AKA Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli), dance producer Mall Grab and the premiere of Ngaiire‘s new live show PAIA, which is described as “an eruption of rage, sex, ecstasy, ceremony, ancestry, and cleansing”. The free program Tumbalong Nights will also return to the tituluar Tumbalong Park, with performances from artists such as Winston Surfshirt, Body Type, Charley, Adrian Eagle and Ayesha Madon taking place across the weeks.
“There’s nothing quite like Vivid,” said Ben Marshall – the Head of Contemporary Music at the Sydney Opera House – in a press statement as part of the program’s announcement. “As well as gathering many of the world’s greatest musical talents here, we’re welcoming the vibrant communities that infuse our music scene with the sounds of Sydney itself.”
