DEVO’s Hometown Have Declared April 1st ‘DEVO Day’

Filing under ‘things that might seem like April Fool’s Day jokes but are very real’, DEVO‘s hometown have declared April 1st ‘DEVO Day’.

The band’s hometown of Akron, Ohio made the proclamation earlier this week, as an effort to help the band’s campaign for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2021.

In a statement given earlier this week, reported by NME, Mayor Dan Horrigan said, “The City of Akron has an unbelievable sense of pride, especially when it involves the success of our people.”

“We are, and will continue to be, immensely proud to be the home of DEVO,” he continued, “and will be rallying this great community to help them achieve the recognition they deserve.”

But the campaign extends beyond the holiday itself. The local government have let the townspeople know that 50 red hats – tiered tyre stacks painted red – have “mysteriously appeared” throughout Akron.

Each tyre stack – sorry, hat – will have a QR code nearby, which when scanned will take you to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s website, where fans can vote for DEVO or any of the other finalists.

The website lets you see the current standings, and at the time of writing, DEVO are placed 8th. Ahead of them are the likes of Fela Kuti, Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, Carole King and Todd Rundgren. Trailing behind DEVO are Dionne Warwick, Rage Against The Machine, Chaka Khan, Kate Bush, New York Dolls, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J and Jay-Z.
