Chloe Zhao Becomes First Woman Of Colour To Win Oscar For Best Director

Chloe Zhao has taken home the Oscar Award for Best Director, courtesy of her 2020 film Nomadland. It’s an historic win too, making her the first woman of colour to win the award in the establishment’s 93-year history.

The Beijing-born director made history with her Oscar nomination alone, being the first woman of colour to be nominated. By winning the award, Chloe Zhao joins Kathryn Bigelow as the two only women to have ever won the award.

Zhao had already taken home Best Director awards from the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Directors Guild of America Awards.

Zhao was also nominated for Best Film Editing, however lost it to Mikkel E. G. Nielsen with Sound of Metal.

Nomadland is nominated for Best Cinematography (Joshua James Richards), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress (Frances McDormand), and Best Picture.

The film follows a woman in her sixties who loses everything in the Great Recession. She instead decides to live as a nomad, making her way through America’s West.
