Amy Winehouse’s Estate ‘Slams’ New Biopic

According to a new report by TMZ, Amy Winehouse’s father has slammed a planned biopic about the late singer.

Says the original report, Mitch Winehouse has said that project, largely based on the 2010 book Saving Amy by Daphne Barak, is “100 per cent not allowed”.

Winehouse, who is the administrator of Amy’s estate, has also reportedly confirmed an authorised biopic is in the works with Universal Music and a production company based in the U.K.

On August 31st, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Halcyon Studios would be producing this unauthorised film. Saving Amy, the book, was completed by Barak with Amy and her family in the final three years of her life.

Halcyon Studios CEO David Ellender said at the time, “Our team is honored to be working on this project. Although her career was cut far too short, Amy was the voice of a generation and we look forward to telling her story in the most poignant way possible.”

Barak herself is attached to the project as an Executive Producer. The author has said that the film is less of a biopic, but uses the footage she captured with Amy herself for the making of the Saving Amy book.

“I have all of the releases and elements needed,” she has said. “…This material is my property to sell.”

According to Mitch Winehouse, the estate hasn’t been approached by Halcyon Studios or Barak for permission to make a biopic.

“They can’t be that stupid,” he has allegedly said. “Everyone knows proper licenses must be granted.”
