A third teenager has been arrested in Austria in connection with a plot to attack Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Thursday. He is reported to be an Iraqi citizen and had been in contact with the main suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots, who was arrested earlier in the week. Another suspect, a 17-year-old with Turkish and Croatian roots, was also arrested.
Austrian Home Secretary Gerhard Karner stated that the third suspect was “not directly connected to the attack plans” but had communicated with the main suspect. A fourth teenager, aged 15, was questioned by police but has not been arrested.
Taylor Swift Plot Third Suspect
Taylor Swift was scheduled to perform at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna over three nights, but the shows were canceled after the plot was foiled on Wednesday. Reports indicate that one of the suspects was hired to work as part of the security team at the venue.
Two of the suspects reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and were radicalized by online content. The plot included plans to stab concertgoers and detonate a bomb.
United Nations spokesperson Alessandra Vellucci commented on the situation, saying, “It is a good demonstration that radicalization of people through the use of social media is really a concern.”
