Comedy Central has announced a newly imagined revival of cult animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show will be arriving on the network.
The original show launched in 1991 on Nickelodeon alongside the likes of Rugrats and Doug, with the madcap adventures of the titular chihuahua and cat team quickly becoming a pop culture favourite.
Now, some 25 years later, new episodes of the show will be developed by a new creative team. According to The New York Post, original voice actor Billy West is expected to return to the project alongside several original writers, but original creator John Kricfalusi, who was accused of sexual misconduct back in 2018, will not be affiliated.
“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” commented Chris McCarthy, ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group president “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”
Indeed, the announcement comes as the network continues to increase its focus on adult-centric animation. Last month, Comedy Central announced they were reviving 90s animated MTV favourite Beavis and Butt-Head, commissioning two new seasons of the show about the heavy metal-loving best friends from series creator Mike Judge. They also recently acquired Jodie, a spin-off based on Daria character Jodie Landon.
