Taika Waititi Has Been Tapped To Direct The Next Star Wars Movie

In some incredible news that dropped overnight (as our American friends celebrated May The 4th), dead set legend Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new move in the Star Wars cinematic universe.

Rumours of his further involvement surfaced in January, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Waititi had been approached by Lucasfilm. Now those rumours are officially confirmed, with a statement released on the official Star Wars website

The Kiwi will be joined on the screenplay by Academy Award nominee Krusty Wilson-Cairns, while the statement also revealed that Leslye Headland has also been tapped to develop a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney + in addition to Waititi’s standalone.

“Psych!” tweeted Waititi today.

The most recent Star Wars film came as The Rise Of Skywalker ended out the third trilogy of films released to date. The trilogy received mixed reviews, but if anyone can revitalise the heart and soul of the franchise, it’s surely our fav NZ director.

Waititi is no stranger to the George Lucas-created cinematic universe, having directed the season finale of the first season of The Mandalorian.

He’s also an Oscar-winner now, having picked up the win for Best Adapted Screenplay after being nominated in three categories at the 2020 Academy Awards for Jojo Rabbit. In the meantime, Waititi is set to direct a new Marvel film titled Thor: Love and Thunder.
