‘Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Juno’ Star Elliot Page Comes Out As Transgender

Academy Award-nominated actor Elliot Page, formerly Ellen Page, has come out as transgender in a new post on social media.

“I want to share with you I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” Page wrote, in a post that has already garnered over 1 million likes in just a few hours at the time of writing.

He also addressed his fear in being an out trans person, given the horrifying statistics around violence committed against trans people throughout America and the world, like the fact that “in 2020 alone, it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women.”

“My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now, and knowing how much privilege I carry, I’m also scared,” Page wrote.

“I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes,’ and of violence. To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I also want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering. The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious, and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences.”

Umbrella Academy, the Netflix series in which Page plays the lead role, has just been renewed for a third season.
