Washington State Becomes First In US To Legalise Recreational Marijuana

In a landmark decision, Washington State has passed a law to legalise marijuana. Though some states have okayed the drug for medicinal uses, Washington state is the first to legalise it for fun.

What this means is that any person over the age of 21 can posses up to 28 grams of weed on them at a time. In its current form, the law only allows it to be smoked on private property, but that didn’t stop thousands of Seattle natives gathering together at the iconic Space Needle for a solid sesh.

According to ABC, police were pretty chilled about it, and clearly have a very different approach to the drug than we do here. At this point officers will only issue a verbal warning for this violation. “What we’re going to say to you is please keep it inside,” says Seattle police department’s Sergeant Sean Whitcomb, adding “Don’t smoke in public. If you do smoke in public, we may give you a verbal warning.”

Within a year’s time, the state will have fully functioning licensed shops. The bud will of course be taxed.

As for the rest of the US, the drug remains illegal on a federal level, but we’ll see how much longer that lasts.
