While the Academy Awards yesterday certainly had some huge talking points, something that has gone under the radar is the debut of the trailer of the 2021 version of West Side Story.
The beloved Bernstein and Sondheim musical, and equally beloved 1961 film based on it, is receiving a remake from Steven Spielberg, with Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the lead roles of Tony and Maria.
In case you don’t know, West Side Story is a reimagining of Romeo & Juliet set in 1950s New York, centred around a rivalry between two gangs – The Jets and The Sharks – and a love story between two people who are affiliated with either of the rival gangs.
During the 2021 Oscars ceremony, Disney unveiled the first look trailer at the long-awaited Spielberg film version of the musical. Watch it below. The movie is set to open in Australian cinemas on December 9th.
During the Disney presentation, Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda also teased the upcoming movie adaption of his musical In the Heights and Questlove previewed his upcoming documentary Summer of Soul.
