For Fans Of: Wet Leg, Delta 5, Anika
Hometown: Los Angeles
Genre: Post-punk, motorik pop
The 411: Automatic is the trio of Izzy Glaudini (synths, lead vocals), Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) and Halle Saxon-Gaines (bass). The Los Angeles band’s debut album, Signal, came out in September 2019 via the influential Stones Throw Records (MF Doom, John Carroll Kirby, Anika).
Automatic grabbed attention in the lead up to Signal with an on-point cover of the classic Delta 5 original, ‘Mind Your Own Business’. Automatic’s decision to release their own version of the Leeds band’s canonical post-punk track was a pointed one, suggesting Automatic weren’t just disciples of the late-70s/early-80s post-punk movement, but bold enough to place themselves in that lineage.
Review: Automatic’s second album, Excess, is a collection of stylish and finely executed motorik pop music. It’s futurist music from a bygone past, harking back to the moment when the ‘70s punk underground met the corporate culture of the ‘80s.
The record begins with ‘New Beginning’, a synth-loaded krautrock track in which Glaudini ponders throwing her life away “in the service of desire.” Like much of Excess, ‘New Beginning’ is at once transfixing and alienating, reflecting the times we live in.
