Age isn’t Travie McCoy’s favourite topic.
The Gym Class Heroes frontman turned 30 last year – and despite still feeling young inside, he secretly wishes he could turn the clock back and be a little younger.
“I’m not the crazy 22 year old I used to be… it fucking sucks man!”
“My birthday is August 6 and on the 5th last year I was freaking out, I was like ‘I don’t wanna be 30!’
“At the end of the day, it’s just a state of mind though… I’m still innocent and 12 years old at heart.”
It’s that youthful state of mind which could explain why McCoy is telling festivalgoers to prepare for “a lot of sweat” and plenty of energy when he and his Gym Class Heroes comrades hit Australia for the Future Music Festival in a few weeks’ time.
“I perspire like a mad man on stage… I kinda get lost the minute I get on stage and we start playing,” he says.
“We always just feed off eachother’s energy and try and push the boundaries and reach out to the crowd… and if the crowd gets excited then we feed off that as well.
“So it’s just going to be a big block full of energy and good music – a big sweaty party for sure.”
Gym Class Heroes’ set will feature a wide collection of the genre-hopping tunes – along with material from their new record The Papercut Chronicles II, which is home to last year’s big hit Stereo Hearts (featuring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine).
McCoy says the band loves playing in Australia due to the friendly nature of the punters and the generous hospitality which is often extended to them.
“People who work at the festivals we go to are always really hospitable and really cool… but Aussies in particular just make you feel like you’re at home,” he said.
“We always have a great time down there.”
And when they’re not sweating it out on stage, you can expect to see McCoy and the band checking out all the other acts on the Future bill.
Of note, McCoy is really keen to see Tinie Tempah and New Order.
“I’m really into 80s music and they (New Order) are a band I’ve definitely been a fan of for a long time… so it’s huge that they’re playing.”
“The great thing about the festivals is we get to play our set and then run around and be little fans for the rest of the day.”
