It’s become that period of time at the end of the year where everyone is looking forward to taking time off and relaxing in the sun (If you’re in New South Wales more like rain with the chance of sun and Victoria – WTF is up with the SNOW?) with drinks and great people.
This is the time of year I look forward to the kick off of the yearly rotation some fantastic live home grown and international electronic acts touring Australia soaking up the warmth.
On my TO DO LIST for the coming months are a line up of internationally lusted after acts including – Flying Lotus, The Mother Fucking GasLamp Killer, Plump DJ’s, Stanton Warriors, Freestylers and new kid on the block Gold Panda. Boxing Day also welcomes the 10th anniversary of Breakfest – the largest break-beats worshipping festival anywhere in Australia.
Breakfest would have to be one of the top festivals anywhere in Australia – in this humble journo’s opinion and in various awards won (like Faster Louder’s “Value for Money 2009”). Limited ticket sales means only the most dedicated (and heat hardy) brave Boxing Day’s sweltering temp’s to venture out to Perth’s Swan Valley and the Belvoir Amphitheatre.
Belvoir – as it’s more commonly known – is a little off the beaten track for a Perth venue. Punters are regularly treated to CBD locations for Parklife and Summa Dayz, but for the keen and adventurous a 20 minute drive out of the CBD is a scenic treat for those busting to get out of town and boogie on down.
The line up this year is hosted by the Cuban Brothers (not to be missed, Cuban Brothers have visited many a summer festival in the past – most memorable show I’ve seen featured the Bro’s covering Lionel Ritchie’s All Night Long, while wearing roller skates, while wearing g-strings, while break dancing. Think about that for a moment…… yeah mad skills.)
2010 is headlined by The Plump DJ’s. The Freestylers are up to get down, Freq Nasty will put in an appearance and Aussie dynamic duo of Kid Kenobi and MC Sureshock will be breaking it down. Atomic Hooligan is also not to be missed, along with the most amazing beat-boxer I’ve ever seen out of the UK – Beardyman. (Check out his Google video on YouTube with Nathan “Flutebox” Lee)
Along with international acts, local legends of the break scene including ex-Perth-new-Melbournian Dan the Man, Fdel, Micah, Philly Blunt, Oli, Blend, Ben Mac, Mono Lisa, Marty McFly, Tee El, Prizzy and Wish.
With 2 stages, and a crowd thanking their lucky stars they got a ticket to 2010’s Breakfest – I for one can’t wait for Christmas to be over so I can get onto the real party.
Keep your eyes peeled as in January Australia is graced with some of the pioneers of modern electronic music – most notable Flying Louts, The Mother Fucking GasLamp Killer and Stanton Warriors.
