Love Letter To A Record: Dylan Wright On Jack Johnson’s ‘On And On’

Music Feeds’ Love Letter to a Record series asks artists to reflect on their relationship with the music they love and share stories about how it has influenced their lives. Here, former ‘Australian Idol’ star and NSW Northern Rivers singer-songwriter Dylan Wright pays homage to Jack Johnson’s 2003 sophomore album ‘On And On’.

It comes as Wright shares Part 2 of his EP ‘Half A World Away’, a six-track collection of country-pop, soul and folk-leaning gems, which you can stream below. To celebrate the full double-EP release, Wright will also be playing a handful of headline shows across regional Australia on his ‘Get A Little Lost’ Tour, visiting fans in Bulli, Cronulla, Canberra, Brunswick Heads, Gold Coast, Bathurst, Orange and the Tilba Valley. Read his love letter to Jack Johnson’s ‘On And On’, and peep his full list of headline dates, down below.

Dylan Wright – Half A World Away

Dylan Wright: To set the scene, I am a daggy-looking 10-year-old when this album comes out. I take the long walk home from school and make it home to see my brother, who’s 9 years older than me, in his room playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater on his PlayStation with this chill, soft rock, soft-pop, reggae-feeling album playing, all while my brother is popping a 180 and flipping out of some skate bowls. I was hooked.

Jack Johnson - Times like these

There are some albums where the songs just melt into one and you can’t really tell them apart. While all of these are pretty chill, they each have their own lives and tell their own stories. Starting off with ‘Times Like These’ which starts off with a nice strum of the guitar and into a jam session with a bongo drum, it just feels like a couple of friends hanging out and sharing their life stories.

Then moving towards the middle of the album you get ‘Taylor’, one of the ultimate acoustic guitar intros, geez I hurt my young little fingers trying to learn that intro. Then nearer the end of the album is one of my favourite songs, ‘Rodeo Clowns’. I always thought it was like a chill rap song and I felt so cool knowing all the words. There are 16 songs on this album that take you on a journey. This is the album I put on if I’m having a crap day or I want to celebrate or I’m cleaning and need something to take my mind off that task. It’s an allrounder album and I’m here to tell you, you need to listen to it today.
