Music Feeds Faves – 10/03/17

The Music Feeds team is ready to wax lyrical about tunes we’re digging and show how ~cool~ we are when dropping that new music knowledge. Here we’ve wrangled together the fresh new songs that made an impact on us these past few weeks, for the ultimate new music playlist. It’s Music Feeds Faves!

nyck – ‘Speak My Mind’

Melbourne-based duo nyck have released just two tracks into the universe thus far and both indicate to me that these guys are going to soundtrack my next heartbreak. I’m not trying to tempt fate or anything, I’m just saying that ‘Decision’ and ‘Speak My Mind’ have already been added to a certain personal playlist – one which I hope I don’t have to hit repeat on anytime soon, but am, at the same time, glad I’ve prepared in advance.

The latest of the two tracks, ‘Speak My Mind’ narratively acts a precursor to their first single ‘Decision’, in that it centres on a turning point in a relationship, those days and weeks where you’re contemplating about what you know is ultimately inevitable.

nyck so acutely and beautifully express that pain, with a simple melody, a kind of Bill Withers-esque soulful vocal and soaring, heartache-filled harmonies. “I think we finally found bottom,” croons one-half of the duo, Nick Acquroff, at one point. Oooft. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor

Sleepmakeswaves – ‘Tundra’

ICYMI: Sleepmakeswaves have returned with another thunderous slice of instrumental magic. Their new single ‘Tundra’ off their forthcoming third LP Made of Breath Only is a post-rock blizzard of spasmodic guitars that relentlessly swivels between chill and manic in a riveting musical dialogue. The 6-minute opus heralds the announcement of a brand new national headlining tour to toast the band’s new album. Check out all the info here and catch the tune below. / Emmy Mack, Staff Writer

Saskwatch – ‘December Nights’

Melbourne outfit Saskwatch has signalled a slight change of course with their latest single ‘December Nights’. Nkechi Anele’s vocals still reign supreme but this time they’re accessorised with psychedelic sounds, surf-rock guitar licks and fantastical sonic accoutrements – a flute, some strings, even bird calls.

All in all, it’s a tasty sampler of what’s sure to be an exciting new album. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor

alt-J – ‘3WW’

UK band-slash-computer-shortcut alt-J returned this week, with the relaxing first taste of their upcoming third album, RELAXER.

The record’s first single, ‘3WW’, is a slow-moving album opener complete with plucked guitars, plodding percussion, twisting alt-J hooks and guest vocals from Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell.

It’s cute and delicate, but also dramatic when it wants to be. RELAXER is set for release on 9th June. / Tom Williams, News Editor

Wharves – ‘Man You Want Me To Be’

’80s new wave vibes and relentless dance grooves are on the menu that Wharves have just served up with their latest single ‘Man You Want Me To Be’. Think of it as disco Shakespeare, with toe-tapping beats, rollicking guitar lines and car-radio vocal hooks masking a surprisingly tragic tale of forbidden love. Make like Romeo and drink its poison (into your ears, I mean) below, and catch Wharves live on their celebratory eight-date East Coast tour performing at venues across Lismore, Melbourne, Byron Bay, Yamba, Wollongong, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane over the next two months. / Emmy Mack, Staff Writer
