Gabriella Cohen is currently readying her third studio album, Blue No More, having released a string of buzzy singles over the last year like ‘Frangelico Dreams’, ‘I Just Got So High’ and ‘Just for the Summer’.
Today, we’re premiering the vintage revivalist’s final single ahead of the album’s arrival, ‘But I Wanted To’. True to form, Cohen’s latest is a lush, attention-grabbing earworm driven by bluesy, jangle-pop guitars and sugary harmonies. It’s also a demonstration of her knack for tastefully indulging in nostalgia while carving out her own distinctive, timeless niche.
Allowing itself to move a little slower than the previous cuts we’ve heard from Blue No More thus far, there’s an undeniable warmth underpinning ‘But I Wanted To’; a hazy, sun-drenched feel that pairs perfectly with Cohen’s torch song lyricism (“I stood by your side when you were not at mine / All the tears I cried would not change your mind.”)
