Sydney songwriter Jackson Carroll has offered up a soul bearing debut single, today premiering the moody and contemplative ‘Holy Hell’.
On ‘Holy Hell’ Carroll wears his musical influences on his sleeve, his vulnerable yet soaring vocals reminiscent of the distinctive, emotive tones of Jeff Buckley and Matt Corby. The track, which was produced by Luke Carra (Caravana Sun) and Ian Pritchett (Angus and Julia Stone), is the first taste of Jackson Caroll’s forthcoming EP.
“The music is more or less the part I know – the song-writing, the lyrics anyway. Things around me happen and I sit in a room and write lyrics in a big book,” explains Caroll. “Luke (Caravana Sun) will help me put chords to the melodies, we work on structure together and come out with a song that’s more or less finished.
“It never really feels finished until you’re hearing in a studio or with a band; with all the instruments in. I have an idea of what I want it to sound like, or some references I can point at and show to people and say, ‘I want it to sound like this’. It’s tricky to temper expectations when you’re comparing your stuff to stuff that already exists, but I think we do a pretty good job of it.”
