‘Filth’, the new single from Melbourne songwriter Tess Hannah, strikes the balance between dark broodiness and gut-punch ferocity to great effect.
Sparse verses centre Hannah’s vocals and wry lyricism (“I wanna lay in my filth and feel bad about it”), foregrounded by a snaking bass line and understated guitar. Those verses are abruptly punctuated by sharp walls of chaotic noise, all leading up to a big, cathartic crescendo that’s extremely satisfying after the restraint of its extended build-up.
The single, which we’re premiering here at Music Feeds before it officially drops tomorrow, is the first taste of Hannah’s forthcoming EP Kind Regards, My Inner Demons. It arrives alongside a video filmed in Hannah’s own backyard with director Gina Somfleth.
“[The song is] about the throbbing headache and the questionable decisions made the night before, knowing too well these lessons will not be learnt,” Hannah explains. “So I set up a bedroom in the backyard of my family home and rallied some friends around to play the ‘hangover ghosts’ to accentuate the silliness of this song.”
