Watch Montaigne Tell The Story Behind Three Tracks From New Album ‘Complex’

Montaigne‘s new album Complex is due out this Friday, 30th August. Having spent three years crafting the follow-up to 2016 debut Glorious Heights, the album is an exploration of loneliness, isolation, distorted love narratives, and self-realisation, each song a reflection of a different period in the musician’s life over the past years.

“It’s basically a series of portraits of all of my insecurities or the weird relationships I’ve been in or neurotic feelings I’ve felt while being attracted to others,” explains the artist. “The album’s like this veil behind which I stashed all these secrets I was keeping from myself.”

Ahead of the album’s release at the end of the week, we’re sharing some videos Montaigne filmed which see her telling the stories behind several tracks on the record.

Of the Bjork-inspired, Wynne Bennett-produced ‘Love Might Be Found (Volcano)’, Montaigne takes us to a moment where she quietly hoped that a natural disaster might have cancelled her flight home, forcing her to stay in Los Angeles and pursue a romance.

“I wanted to hang around and keep hanging out with this person, but I had to leave. So I was like, what if a massive weather event just kept my plane landed?”

Lead single ‘Ready’ was born from a desire to write an empowering song that addressed the systemic factors that go into people – particularly women – not getting opportunities, and the strength in pushing past those barriers.

“We wanted it to be like, things are really hard but I believe in myself and I’m super talented, and I’m willing to work hard to get to where I need to be. It’s just a matter of the right thing coming along and being able to capitalise on it.”
