2014 Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards Announced

The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) has announced that submissions are open for the 2014 Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards, which will be held on Wednesday October 8th for the first time at North Melbourne’s Historic Meat Market.

Now in its ninth year, the Carlton Dry Music Awards are an opportunity to recognise the successes of Australia’s independent music community. Past winners include Gotye, Chet Faker, Paul Kelly, Flume, Vance Joy, Hilltop Hoods, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Parkway Drive and Wagons.

Awards to be presented during the evening include Best Independent Album, Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album, Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk Album, and Best Independent Label, among others.

A diverse pool of representatives from within the industry will once again be voting this year, from online media, music press, broadcasters, independent music industry representatives and artists themselves.

Contenders for awards this year include Brisbane’s Sheppard whose debut single Geronimo has reached Triple Platinum status, and gone on to become one of the highest selling Australian singles of the year.

Courtney Barnett has also enjoyed both local and international success, playing not only some of the world’s biggest music festivals but also performing on high profile US TV talk shows and scoring herself a nomination for the UK’s AIM Independent Music Awards.

Applications are also open for the Carlton Dry $50,000 Global Music grant, which allows successful the recipient access to funds required to take their music to audiences around the world. Last year’s recipients of the grant, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, put the funds towards touring the US, with shows in Dallas, Chicago and Washington, a slot on the legendary Austin Psychfest, residencies in New York City and additional dates in Canada.

Nominees for the 2014 Music Awards must have material released between August 1st, 2013 and July 31st, 2014, and the recording must be owned by the artist, or by an entirely Australian owned Independent Record Label. See here for more details.

Stay tuned for further announcements including nominations, performing artists, and guest presenters.
