Celebrations for triple j’s 10th J Awards are underway and the winners of this year’s awards have just been announced with Melbourne producer Chet Faker taking away the prestigious Australian Album of the Year award for his debut Built On Glass.
The award caps off a mammoth year for the Melbourne artist, whose real name is Nick Murphy, and sees him beat out 11 other artist for the top prize, including The Preatures, Ball Park Music, Flight Facilities, Hilltop Hoods and last year’s Unearthed Artist Of The Year J Award recipient Remi.
Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill described Built On Glass as “an album rich in emotion and textures, with the sounds and arrangements keeping the songs pure and uncluttered.” He added, “Built On Glass will stand the test of time simply because the songs are so good too.”
Faker, who will soon head back home for a national tour, thanked triple j and accepted the award via a video message. “I still remember a few years ago first hearing my song on triple j and freaking out then, so it’s a great honour. Thanks for the love and support back home from the best radio station in Australia.”
Triple j also announced 23-year-old soul-pop chanteuse Meg Mac as the J Award winner for Unearthed Artist Of The Year. The station cited the young singer’s first powerful single Known Better, which she followed up with the raw and personal Every Lie and Roll Up Your Sleeves, all of which feature on her debut EP MEGMAC. The softly-spoken singer with the booming voice, accepted the award in person.
Additionally, the inaugural Double J Australian Artist of the Year award was given to roots-rocker Mia Dyson, with the station acknowledging her recent release, the genre-traversing album Idyllwild, as well as Dyson’s energetic live shows. Double J host Myf Warhurst presented Dyson the award.
Finally, the award for Australian Music Video of the Year went to the reclusive Adelaide-born hitmaker Sia for her wildly popular video for Chandelier. The famous video won hearts thanks to directors Sia and Daniel Askill as well as the hypnotic talents of 11 year old dancer Maddie Ziegler and has been viewed nearly 300 million times. Sia too accepted the award, via video message in her signature style – with her back to the camera.
