The 2016 J Award Winners Have Been Announced

The 2016 J Awards have been handed out, celebrating the best local artists and releases of the year.

D.D. Dumbo has walked away as the big winner, taking home the award for triple j Australian Album Of The Year for Utopia Defeated.

He beat out records by Flume, Big Scary, SAFIA and more to claim the title. He now joins the ranks of Courtney Barnett, Flume and Tame Impala who have all won the award in the past.

The Double J Artist Of The Year award, which celebrates an artist who has taken over the airwaves on triple j‘s sister digital station, has been awarded to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

In just four years, the band have released eight albums including 2016’s Nonagon Infinity which earned them the award. This comes just after they cleaned up at The Age Music Victoria Awards last night.

Tash Sultana has been crowned the Unearthed Artist Of The Year – the award celebrating the best Aussie newcomer in 2016.

She’s had a massive year off the back of her track Jungle which has taken over the airwaves on triple j. You can catch her at next year’s Laneway Festival where she’ll no doubt prove exactly why she nabbed the award.

On the visual side of things, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have been awarded Australian Music Video Of The Year for their wild People Vultures video, marking their second J Award for 2016.

The video was directed by Danny Cohen and Jason Galea and sees the band come together to form a massive vulture.

The J Awards are part of triple j‘s Ausmusic month, which celebrates the tunes being made in our very own backyard.
