Grammy Award-nominated rapper Afroman is back. Don’t worry if you got too high to remember his first go-around in 2001, behind sort-of-but-not-really-pro-marijuana anthem Because I Got High, because the West Coast MC has returned with his definitely pro-marijuana anthem Because I Got High (Positive Remix).
Whereas the original cast weed-related shade, suggesting that puffin’ on a J might cause you to skip court appearances and forget to pay alimony, the Positive Remix promotes marijuana as a fix for Glaucoma and an alternative to cigarettes, alcohol and prescription drugs.
The new music video sees Afroman rolling down the street like a total couch pimp, smiling from ear-to-ear, rocking purple like Prince, and, of course, toking on a joint. As Afroman astutely raps, marijuana legalisation can help increase State revenue, assist in the payment of building schools, and fund drug treatment. Why? “Because I got high.”
The reworked Afroman breakthrough hit comes in support of spreading marijuana legalisation across the US.
“Because I Got High put me on the map,” Afroman told Rolling Stone. “It’s what got me a record deal, a Grammy nomination and made me a household name.” Getting high and rapping about it got me to where I am today.” Wiser words have never be
The remixed comedy single looks to support the Smoke the Vote campaign, which aims to raise awareness on upcoming votes for marijuana legalisation in the District of Columbia, Alaska, Oregon, and a medical marijuana amendment in Florida, all happening in the States on 4th November.
“With the current political battle with states trying to legalise weed, I thought it was a good time to educate,” added Afroman. “Set the record straight about marijuana’s benefits, which is why I wanted to remake the song.” More power to ya Afroman!
Now sit back, relax, maybe spark one up (responsibly), and enjoy Afroman’s Because I Got High (Positive Remix) below.
