Ben Lee has dropped a new single today. ‘Born For This Bullshit’ features Sad13 and is this indie-folk-country-pop hybrid. It’s a catchy as velcro bop that’s accidentally super relevant.
“Like all the best songs I’ve written, I had no idea how relevant it would be when I first wrote it,” explains Lee.
“‘We’re All in this Together’ was the same way. I wrote ‘Born for this Bullshit’ in 2019 but I finally understand it in 2021.
“It’s about positivity, swagger, keeping your chin up, even though we’re in total global chaos, true crisis, but still kinda choosing to enjoy the ride.
“I can be a bit of a cheeky bastard. It’s about refusing to be bogged down in negativity.”
The accompanying video encapsulates that. Dancing in nothing but his pink sneaks and a pink cowboy hat in a plethora of acid trip scenes — the video is just a bunch of fun and silliness.
The new single comes with the announcement of a new album. I’m Fun will be Ben Lee’s ~ 20th ~ studio album and it’s set to be massive.
Ben Lee originally wanted to record the new album with a live band. When the pandemic cooked that plan, he decided to make it remotely, with the help of a bunch of legends.
The album is produced with the help of Jon Brion, Shamir, Sadie Dupuis and Darren Seltmann. But the guests????
Zooey Deschanel, Christian Lee Hutson, Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Megan Washington, Georgia Maq and Eric D Johnson.
Mammoth.
“This album, this moment in my career, is all about balancing some hard-earned wisdom from a 30-year long career with the vigor and energy of youth,” says Lee.
“That’s why it was as important to me to collab with artists like Jon Brion and Money Mark who I’ve both known for over 2 decades, as much as people like Shamir and Georgia Maq who are young and lit up with creative adrenaline.
“I like being a generational bridge between freaky artists. They are my tribe!”
How good. I’m Fun! will arrive Friday, 17th June next year. You can pre-order it here.
