Big Day Out 2014 has officially begun, with the festival taking over the New Zealand city of Auckland yesterday, 17th January. By all accounts a raging success, the event was the biggest Big Day Out Auckland had ever seen. Even Serj Tankian and Neil Finn were there, just to check it out.

Seattle rockers Pearl Jam played a mammoth set which included material from their 2013 album Lightning Bolt, old classics such as Even Flow and Black, and a cover of The Who‘s Baba O’Riley to close out their second and final encore.

Canadian indie-rock heroes Arcade Fire performed a massive set spanning their entire discography, marking a fresh change from the Reflektor-heavy shows in late 2013. Fan favourites Keep The Car Running, Ready To Start and Wake Up are very pleasant surprises.

SNOOP DOGG
Rapper Snoop Dogg performed the night of 16th January, prior to the festival’s first day, in a more intimate club show at The Powerstation. He performed material from his other pseudonym Snoop Lion, as well as two Dr Dre covers and Snoop classics Drop It Like It’s Hot and I Wanna Love You. According to the NZ Herald, the exact same set was played the next night at BDO.
