As a light begins to appear at the end of the tunnel created by Sydney’s catastrophic lockout laws, Queensland is bracing to kick-off its own toxic love affair with the same restrictions that have ripped the heart out of Sydney’s once vibrant nightlife.
After the Sunshine Supernanny State government pushed through the toughest lockout laws in the country with basically zero consultation with the live music sector, venue owners feared a Kings Cross-style wipeout would occur in Brisbane’s live music nerve centre of Fortitude Valley.
And now, they’re doing the only thing they can about it: throwing a big ass party as one last FU to the lockout laws – and the government that’s inflicting them – before they come into effect and inevitably crush business, jobs and culture en masse.
Four of Fortitude Valley’s top live music venues are uniting to throw Brisbane’s Big Kick On! bash at the end of the month, with a fine crop of local acts getting involved including Baskervillain, The Jensens, Twin Haus, Carmouflage Rose, Erick Sanders, Golden Vessel, Shag Rock and more TBA.
They’ll hit the stage across BIGSOUND hubs The Brightside, Black Bear Lodge, The Foundry and The Flying Cock from 8pm on Thursday, 30th June, with free entry for all punters.
You can sign an anti-lockouts petition at the door and there’ll be DJs keeping the good times rolling until the government tells you to go home.
The new 2am drinks cutoff (3am in entertainment precincts) will hit from July 1st, with the state’s new 1am lockout to strike from February, 2017.
