Diffuser has reported that CBGB, a film based on the evolution of the New York club self-credited as being ‘the birthplace of punk rock’, wrapped shooting last month and is scheduled for cinematic release next year.
Director Randall Miller explained to Rolling Stone that CBGB the film will focus on the pivotal yet initially unintentional role the club and it’s owner Hilly Kristal played during the 70s in the New Wave and American punk rock movements.
“It is a story of Hilly and how he basically was the catalyst for this gigantic, sea-changing music,” Miller told Rolling Stone, “And he didn’t set out to do that initially, but he became sort of the godfather of punk and underground rock.”
As Music Feeds previously reported actors enlisted in the film include Malin Akerman playing Debbie Harry, Joel David Moore appearing as Joey Ramone, Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins portraying Iggy Pop and Alan Rickman taking on the role of Kristal.
Obviously a film about a legendary music venue as the potential for an epic soundtrack. According to Diffuser the film plans to boast over 40 tunes but with a total budget of less then $10 million, CBGB writer Jody Savin admits it will be tricky obtaining certain songs.
”The music decisions are not done yet,” Savin explains, “Some bands are more cooperative than others.”
