After last month announcing the release of their second album The Physical World a full decade since they dropped their genre-defining debut You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine, Canadian dance-punk duo Death From Above 1979 have unveiled a brand new single, Trainwreck 1979.
The scorching track debuted last night on Zane Lowe‘s BBC Radio 1 show. The band will release their first album since their 2004 debut this September, having decided to reunite largely due to the pressure from fans.
“No matter what Jesse and I do, on whatever scale of success it’s sat on, there’s always some kind of reference to Death From Above,” drummer/singer Sebastian Grainger said earlier this year. “It’s only frustrating because it’s so lazy. So we’re putting out a Death From Above record and if the press is like, ‘It’s not what we expected,’ or however they react to it, it’s like, ‘Well, you’ve been fucking asking for it.’”
The album has been produced by Wolfmother/Oasis producer Dave Sardy. Grainger described one of the tracks on The Physical World as “Springsteen meets Sonic Youth.” Meanwhile Bassist Jesse F Keeler previously told Rolling Stone, “The last record we made was like [Radiohead‘s] Pablo Honey, and this one will be more like Kid A.”
The Physical World is out this September.
