Diplo Is Making A Comedy Series About His Own Life, Starring James Van Der Beek

EDM producer Diplo is working on a comedy television based on his own life, and starring and written by actor James Van Der Beek, who famously portrayed him in that hilarious ‘A Day In The Life Of Diplo’ parody last year.

Deadline reports that the series, which supposedly has the amazing working title ‘What Would Diplo Do?’, is being executive produced by Diplo for six episodes on Viceland, and will also feature contributions from Diplo’s longtime manager Kevin Kusatsu and music video mastermind Brandon Dermer, who will direct the show.

‘What Would Diplo Do?’ is reportedly slated to premiere later in 2017, and has already been described as “‘Louie’ meets ‘WorldStar HipHop’ crossed with ‘This Is Spinal Tap'”. In the show, Van Der Beek reportedly plays a fictitious version of Diplo in a series of moralistic stories about life.

“The show doesn’t take itself too serious but it’s not cynical,” Van Der Beek says.

The idea for ‘What Would Diplo Do?’ stems from ‘A Day In The Life Of Diplo’, a video starring Van Der Beek released in 2016 which parodies Diplo’s life as a wealthy DJ and producer.

Speaking about that video, Van Der Beek says, “I had that day free, I did a quick rewrite and found that it came easily. It was fun and that was it, I never thought it would lead to a series.”

Viceland reportedly approached Diplo’s manager Kusatsu with the idea, and the team behind the video jumped at the chance for more. “It seamed like a really fun opportunity,” Van Der Beek says.

“I’ve enjoyed deconstructing my own image quite a bit over the years, but to have the chance to do it with a global megastar like Diplo who’s letting us to do something fun and ridiculous that few people have the balls to allow is crazy.”

‘What Would Diplo Do?’ (or whatever it ends up being called) is set to start production in February. Meanwhile, Diplo will tour Australia in March.
