After nearly three decades behind the kit for Pearl Jam, drummer Matt Cameron has officially exited the band.
Cameron shared the big news on socials this week, writing: “I’ve taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam”.
“I am forever grateful”
He went on to thank his bandmates, crew, and fans, describing the experience as “a beautiful ride”.
“Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter”. he wrote. “I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
Cameron first joined Pearl Jam in 1998, stepping in mid-tour after previous drummer Jack Irons’ departure. What was intended as a temporary fill-in quickly evolved into a permanent gig — one that would span 27 years, seven albums, and countless world tours. His steady playing helped shape some of the band’s most adventurous material, from Riot Act to Backspacer to this year’s Dark Matter.
Of course, Cameron was already a legend in his own right before joining Pearl Jam, thanks to his trailblazing work with Soundgarden — making him one of the rare musicians to be a key member of two of the most influential bands of the grunge era.
Pearl Jam paid tribute in a heartfelt post of their own, writing: “He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings… We love you Matt.”
Naturally, speculation is swirling about what’s next for Cameron. With Foo Fighters recently parting ways with drummer Josh Freese and a string of tour dates on the horizon, fans are wondering if Cameron might be eyeing a new throne.
Whatever comes next, Cameron leaves behind a huge legacy — never overly flashy, but always rock solid. A drummer’s drummer. A quiet powerhouse who helped steer one of rock music’s most enduring acts through decades of evolution.
Aussie fans were lucky to catch his final ever local shows with Pearl Jam last year, on the down under leg of their Dark Matter world tour.
