Gerard Way’s Netflix Original Series Will Feature Mary J. Blige

Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has tapped Mary J. Blige for his upcoming Netflix Original series The Umbrella Academy.

The Umbrella Academy is an adaptation of his comic book series which he began writing back in 2007.

The graphic novels, are illustrated by Gabriel Bà and follow the story of a “dysfunctional family of superheroes” in an alternate version of 1977 America where president JFK was never shot.

US R&B singer and actress Blige is the first big name to be revealed for the project. She will play Cha-Cha who, according to a press release (via Pitchfork), is a “ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets.”

Blige is nominated for an Academy Awards this year for her work on the film Mudbound.

There is no release date for the show just yet but the 10-part series is expected to debut sometime this year on the streaming service.
