Global Citizen Trade Free Concert Tickets For Online Activism

The Global Poverty Project (GPP), a group who seek to increase the number of “global citizens” engaging in activism to help fight extreme poverty, have announced the launch of Global Citizen Tickets (GCT), which offers free concert tickets in exchange for acts of online social activism.

As The Music Network reports, the program was launched in Australia today, with a number of high-profile touring acts, including Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, Tame Impala, and Daniel Johns, pledging tickets to future Australian concerts as a reward for active “global citizens.”

After registering online at the GCT website, users accumulate points via social actions, like sharing a video addressing the 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty, signing a petition, or contacting members of government. The points can then be used to win two free concert tickets.

“Music not only has the ability to stir every last emotion inside you; but also has the power to inspire, educate, and stop and make you think about certain issues,” said Chair of Global Citizen Tickets Australia and co-founder of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival & And Publishing, Danny Rogers.

“We’re really glad that so many amazing Aussie bands are donating tickets to their shows and raising awareness with their fans about social change,” he added. GCT is the vision of Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis and GPP CEO Hugh Evans, who launched with a free concert in Central Park.

The show featured performances from Neil Young, Foo Fighters, and The Black Keys to an audience of 60,000. Acting Australian Country Director of the GPP Will Watterson believes Global Citizen Tickets is the kind of forward-thinking initiative that could help put an end to extreme poverty.
