Guy Sebastian Is Australia’s First Eurovision Song Contest Entrant

Guy Sebastian has officially been announced as the artist who will be flying the flag for Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Austria.

At a press conference at the Sydney Opera House this morning, SBS hosts Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang brought Sebastian to the stage for the big reveal.

Asked what he will be singing at the competition Sebastian remained unsure. “I can’t sing anything released prior to September,” he explained.

“So something off my album which I haven’t previously released a single of.”

He continued: “I want it to be epic… I want it to represent us as a nation well. I want it to be fun and emotional.”

“I’m not going to change myself to fit a format.”

While most contestants have to get through one of two semi-finals to make it to the grand final, Australia has been granted a wild-card entry into the grand final. Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and the hosting country will join Australia in being granted immediate access to the grand final.

Austria’s Conchita Wurst took home the prize last year meaning that the contest will be held in Vienna this year. This won’t just be the first year that Australia gets to compete, it’s also the first year that Australia can officially vote for the winner.

Over the past few weeks there’s been plenty of speculation as to who would be the first ever person to represent Australia in the biggest song contest in the world. There was a petition for The Presets to appear, plenty of talk around TISM reforming for the event, and even a suggestion that Kylie Minogue could be our girl, although she ruled that out herself.

Jessica Mauboy, another strong contender for Australia’s entry this year, performed her song Sea Of Flags at the contest in Denmark, though she wasn’t competing.

The Eurovision 2015 grand final will be broadcast live in Australia on SBS on the morning of Sunday, 24th May, before being repeated on Sunday evening.
