Green Day‘s iconic 2004 LP American Idiot is getting the movie treatment thanks to HBO.
The cable network that gifted us with Games Of Thrones is now turning its attention to the punk veterans’ angst-ridden rock opera, and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is set to star (although no word at this point whether the flick will also feature dragons).
“We’ve got a green light from HBO,” BJ tells NME. “And the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”
BJ is set to play St. Jimmy, the same character he portrayed in the Broadway adaptation of American Idiot in 2010.
And, as noticed by MTV, Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda is very excited about this:
Can. I. Be. In. This. I'll. Play. Anyone. https://t.co/UWoEJ4CQwf

The Green Day frontman has been stretching his acting chops of late, after bagging the lead role in the forthcoming Hollywood comedy, Ordinary World.
ICYMI: Green Day also recently announced a 2017 Australian arena tour for their new album Revolution Radio, which is out now.
The American Idiot movie idea has been kicking around for about 10 years now. It’s expected to be produced by Green Day themselves and directed by Michael Mayer, who also directed the Broadway musical. In 2013, Mayer confirmed that the flick was still happening, but production was being held up due to “Hollywood bullshit”.
Hopefully with HBO now on board, those days are behind it.
