Foo Fighters songs can be emotional OK? If you tell me you’ve never shed a lonely tear during their acoustic rendition of Everlong or when, like, Next Year comes on shuffle when you’re on your way to work then I am calling bullshit, mate.
Dave Grohl himself recently “cried like a fucking baby” when Florence + The Machine covered Times Like These, and then the Italian guy who organised a 1,000-person band to cover Learn To Fly in a bid to lure Fooies to play a show in their hometown also blubbered, after Grohl personally responded to the video and said yes.
And now, The Grohlenator has made a fully grown man cry during a recent Foo’s concert in Denver, Colarado, and responded with perhaps one of the best Good-Guy-Grohl moments yet.
While playing an acoustic rendition of the intrinsically sentimental My Hero out on the stage’s runway portion, Grohl asked the house lights to be turned up so he could see the crowd better, and proceeded to make a heartfelt speech.
However, his banter was interrupted after he caught sight of an apparently inebriated gentleman in the front row, weeping from the sheer force of raw emotion (and/or alcohol) brought on by the Foo’s performance.
As Alternative Nation notes, Grohl quickly abandoned his speech to address the sobbing fan:
“Don’t cry motherfucker, I know you’re drunk, don’t cry. Are you crying right now? You’re fucking crying aren’t you? (Laughs) I love you man, look at you, holy shit,” he said. “You know what, fuck that speech I was just going to make, I’m singing this shit to you right now.”
“I’m gonna sing this fucking song right in your face, man to man, prison style, I’m going man to man,” he continued. “Me and you, I want some real tears, you better sing it with me. (Laughs) Don’t make me cry, because I promised I wouldn’t do this.”
In a classic Grohl move, the Foo Fighters frontman then pulled the man, named Anthony, up on stage and, true to his word, serenaded him with the Kurt Cobain-inspired ballad. Old mate even joined in for a sing.
