Ocean Grove have entered the triple j studio this week to maintain that hectic Like A Version streak. They’ve taken on a 2006 classic, Sneaky Sound System’s ‘UFO’.
Vocalist, Dale Tanner and the band begin the cover in its original glory before, pretty subtly, tucking TF in and making it an iconic Ocean Grove version.
They took along Running Touch on guitar too. In his Behind the Like A Version interview, Tanner explains he actually used to be an Ocean Grove member before he went solo.
Taking full creative freedom with the cover, the Melbourne heavyweights manage to mash some of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Sprit’ into the mix. It’s an absolute treat.
On the hints of Nirvana, Tanner says there are, “little bits and pieces where we could just seep in our influences from the heavy world, the punk world, the hardcore world, and the metal world.”
“It’s that nostalgia of a time in Australian dance music that is very much pioneering a new sound for the first time,” he says.
“It’s about aliens. So, you know the weirder, the better. If you don’t believe in them then there’s something wrong with you.”
As for their original? They’ve shared a special rendition of their 2019 single ‘SUNNY’.
