The Smiths were one of the most influential rock bands of their time, despite only being active for around five years in the 1980s – but we almost saw a reunion in 2008, the band’s guitarist Johnny Marr has revealed.
In his new autobiography Set Me Free, Marr says that during a meet up with Morrissey in September of 2008, there was a period where it looked more than likely.
In an excerpt of the booked posted by The Guardian Marr says they were discussing the possibility of a reunion and that “for four days it was a very real prospect.
“Suddenly we were talking about the possibility of the band re-forming,” says Marr. “And in that moment it seemed that with the right intention it could actually be done and might even be great.”
He went on to explain that due to other projects getting in the way, the vision was unfortunately never realised.
“Morrissey and I continued our dialogue and planned to meet up again. I went to Mexico with The Cribs, and then suddenly there was radio silence. Our communication ended, and things went back to how they were and how I expect they always will be.”
Morrissey is currently in the middle of his Australian tour, with his final dates wrapping up early next week.
