A shoey has become a bloody gross ritual for many artists when they play shows in this country. In fact, Post Malone did one at his very recent Australian tour. While some might see it as a rite of passage, country queen Kacey Musgraves wasn’t having a bar of it.
During the middle of her set, she was taking a swig of tequila, or as she called it “water, terrible tasting water”, before someone in the crowd had lifted up their shoe.
Didn’t take long for the crowd en masse to start chanting “SHOEY! SHOEY! SHOEY!” and Musgraves, being the graceful artist she is, politely but adamantly declined. As the chants continued, she said “I’m not drinking out of your fucking shoe.”
“You could have athlete’s foot or something.”
Then, when the crowd prompted that she should drink out of one of her bandmates’ shoes – she was wearing ankle-strap heels – she said “I’d rather drink out of your shoe than any of their shoes.”
For what it’s worth, she did embrace another Aussie ritual – the “Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!” chant. When she said that Texans like herself say “yeehaw!” a lot, the crowd erupted into the chant to which she responded “that is like y’alls ‘yeehaw!’ huh?”
Musgraves has one more show left in Melbourne coming this Tuesday.
