Karnivool’s ‘Asymmetry’ Makes Historic Chart-Topping Debut

Karnivool’s new album Asymmetry has debuted at number one in the Australian ARIA album chart, their first album to reach the top spot. They’ve bested their previous effort, 2009’s Sound Awake, which debuted at number two.

The album, which was released by the band’s own Cymatic Records via Sony Music in Australia and elsewhere through Sony, has also made the iTunes Top Five in Australia, Malta, Finland, New Zealand, Israel, Hungary and made it to the top of the iTunes US Metal chart. The band are clearly thrilled at the news, thanking their fans in a statement:

“We thought to we’d take this opportunity to extend our sincerest gratitude to all those, who after so patiently waiting, purchased a copy either online or from ye olde retail store. We’ll chalk this down as another win for independent alternative Australian music and everyone who supports it!”

Singer Ian Kenny has also made some ARIA chart history as the first artist to have two number one albums in the same calendar year by two different bands. In March of this year Kenny’s other band Birds of Tokyo released their album March Fires, which also debuted at the album chart top spot.

Karnivool’s Asymmetry Tour will begin in Adelaide this Tuesday, with the band playing throughout the country for the next two weeks. The tour then goes to Europe in October and November, with the band headlining some of Europe’s best rock and metal venues.

Statement from Karnivool:

“Friends of Vool, The news has just come through that our new record Asymmetry has cracked the número uno spot on the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association ) album chart… And we’re bloody stoked. This is not something we got into the business of music making to try and achieve, nor did it ever cross our minds that it was even possible. Yet here we are!

“So we thought to we’d take this opportunity to extend our sincerest gratitude to all those, who after so patiently waiting, purchased a copy either online or from ye olde retail store. We’ll chalk this down as another win for independent alternative Australian music and everyone who supports it!

“We hope you all get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that by buying our records you are helping to ensure we can keep doing what we do. Let’s be honest, it’s nice being able to pay the rent! We hope you are enjoying Asymmetry. This one’s for you lot.

Love always,

Drew, Kenny, Jon, Hoss and Steve.”
