King Stingray Oust Lead Singer Hours Before Kicking Off National Tour

King Stingray have officially split with their lead vocalist and co-founder Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu, just hours before the East Arnhem Land band are set to take the stage for the first night of their national tour. In an announcement shared to Instagram, the band’s statement simply read that they had “parted ways” with Yunupiŋu – offering no explanation as to why, nor wishing him the best in his future endeavours. Yunupiŋu had not performed live with the band for over 18 months, and had been excluded from recent press photos in support of their second album, For The Dreams.

While the band didn’t elaborate on Yunupiŋu’s departure, they did introduce his replacement: Ngalakan Wanambi, a Yolŋu man who has previously joined the band as an auxiliary touring musician. “We’re stoked to introduce Ngalakan stepping up on vocals,” the band wrote. “He absolutely smashed it with us on our recent US tour.” The band also promised that the “same King Stingray spirit” would be present on their national tour. “This For The Dreams tour is gonna be something really special,” they wrote. “Can’t wait to see you all out there.”

King Stingray – ‘Lookin’ Out’

Yunupiŋu began King Stingray in 2020 with his childhood friend Roy Kellaway, releasing their debut single ‘Hey Wanhaka’ later that year via The Chats‘ Bargain Bin Records. His vocals are featured on both of the band’s studio albums, although guitarist Dimathaya Burarrwanga began to sing more lead vocal numbers on For The Dreams and began singing Yunupiŋu’s songs following his hiatus.

The For The Dreams tour is set to kick off tonight at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, having moved from its original date and venue of the Hordern Pavilion on Friday, March 21st. The band will be supported by Beddy Rays and The Belair Lip Bombs, with all remaining tickets on sale via Handsome Tours.
